Fanny Hensel, Italian Journey

A Musical Holiday Album

It was in 1839 that German pianist and composer Fanny Hensel (the sister of Felix Mendelssohn) and her husband, painter Wilhelm Hensel, set off on a long awaited journey to Italy, which they proceeded to record in a highly personal fashion. For each of her newly composed “Italian” pieces, her husband provided an accompanying illustration, which they gathered together into a unique travel album. Originally intended only for the immediate family, the album was so lovingly put together and performed that it found its way to wider circles – and one regrets not having been along on the trip.
